Shreyas Iyer Stable After Scary On-Field Injury Against Australia

Shreyas Iyer India’s 50 over cricket team’s vice-captain is stable as per the latest update after he got injured in the third ODI between Australia and India. Shreyas Iyer was taken to the Sydney hospital right after the injury as he was not feeling comfortable while in the dressing room. How Shreyas Iyer got injured ?

Iyer got injured when he was running for the catch of Alex Carey and landed awkwardly on his left lower rib cage. After the initial hit, team physio did the assessment, and Iyer was taken off the field. Then within very short period of time he was taken to the Sydney hospital where the news came out of rib injury and internal bleeding was detected. Also the scans confirm a laceration injury to the spleen.

How serious is the Iyer’s injury ?

Because the spleen is a vascular organ, splenic bleeding can result in a potentially life-threatening situation. The BCCI released a statement on Iyer’s injury on Monday October 27th stating that “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.” BCCI also stated “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”

BCCI also confirms the Indian Team doctor will stay in Sydney with Iyer to monitor the every day’s condition.

No reports of any family member accompanying Iyer’s at moment, but some sources say one of the Family member will join Iyer after clearing all the visa processes.

As of now both countries medical teams are coordinating and working together on this.

What Iyer’s injury means for India ?

Shreyas Iyer is recently appointed as a vice-captain of team India in 50 over game and plays at number 4 and consistently delivered at all big stages whether we talk about 2023 ODI world cup or Champions Trophy 2025.

Shreyas Iyer scored 243 runs in CT 2025 at an average of 48.60. Iyer scored two half-centuries against New Zealand and Pakistan in both big matches. Even in the semi-final vs Australia(45) and in the final vs NZ(37), Iyer’s contribution was well noticed.

At no. 4 position, Iyer has become one of the most dependable batsman’s of Indian cricket team in ODI format. He has played important knocks in crucial and high pressure matches often providing the stability India needed.
